WASHINGTON MASK CHALLENGE
*UPDATE: We are reserving our remaining on-site fabric for masks kits for students, 4-H groups, and other educational groups making masks. Therefore, we will not be mailing fabric to individual mask-makers going forward. For all those who have already ordered fabric, thank you for taking up the mask challenge! We will honor your request for fabric.
The Lt. Governor’s office has partnered with the United Ways of the Pacific Northwest and Serve Washington to organize a statewide homemade mask-making initiative to encourage the general public to make, wear, and donate cloth masks.
This video was created as an in-kind donation to the Washington Mask Challenge by the Kully Struble media firm.
WHY
There are many organizations in our state that need cloth masks right now. These include nursing homes, homelessness service organizations, food banks, grocery stores, restaurants, and more. Although these organizations are working in close contact with potentially vulnerable populations every day, they are not requesting N95 or other manufactured masks, which must be prioritized for frontline healthcare providers working with COVID-19 patients.
Members of the general public should also be wearing some kind of cloth covering over the nose and mouth whenever going out to perform essential activities, per Center for Disease Control and State Department of Health guidelines. As a reminder, cloth masks are NOT a replacement for social distancing and proper hand-washing.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
If you are an organization who needs masks:
Visit this page to request masks for your organization.
If you are already listed as an organization requesting masks with a United Way or Volunteer Center, there is no need to sign up here, as they are already one of the Washington Mask Challenge partners.
If you are a mask maker:
Follow these simple instructions to make cloth face masks out of household materials. Please make a minimum of 10 masks.
Fill out this simple form so our office can track mask donations.
Our office will respond by email with instructions for sending your masks to an organization in need.
