The Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen is partnering with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, US Attorney James A. McDevitt for the welcoming announcement of Project ChildSafe's second phase in Spokane, WA. The distribution of 240,000 free safety kit gunlocks which will be distributed to local law enforcement agencies across the state. The free firearm safety kits, which include a gun locking device, can be obtained by visiting any of the Project ChildSafe scheduled tour stops across the country. Some events include state and county fairs, outdoor shooting sports events, fishing and hunting expos, sporting goods shows, retail store events and other festivals. Project ChildSafe is also assisting local law enforcement agencies with scheduling firearm safety events in their communities. The education vehicles will offer free safety information, demonstrations on the use of the gun locks, and valuable tips on firearm safety. Parents are encouraged to have their children sign the Project ChildSafe pledge, where the child pledges to be safe around firearms. A trained program representative, working with local law enforcement officers, is on hand to answer questions about proper firearm storage in the home. Project ChildSafe, the nation’s largest firearm safety education program, has begun the second phase of its nationwide campaign to promote safe and responsible gun ownership and storage. The program reminds gun owners to take steps to prevent a loaded gun from falling into the hands of a child, thereby preventing tragic accidents. In September 2003 through August 2004, Project ChildSafe distributed nearly 20 million safety kits to 50 states and five U.S. territories. Project ChildSafe's second safety tour from September 2004 through August 2005 is delivering 12 million more safety kits for a total nationwide distribution of 32 million. Phase two of Project ChildSafe is funded by two grants from the U.S. Department of Justice that total $30 million. These two grants will fund the program from September 1, 2004, through August 31, 2005. Phase one of Project ChildSafe was funded by a $50 million U.S. Department of Justice grant. “This program fits in perfectly with the long-term goals of the Lieutenant Governor’s office, which is to help kids grow up healthy in safe communities, with opportunity. My office and I heartily congratulate Project ChildSafe for its dedication and foresight in developing a plan to continue the free gunlock giveaway program with increased allocations.” Lt. Governor Brad Owen
Lt. Governor Owen emphasizes that "this
program is not about gun control but is about safety. The program and
gun locks are designed to help make homes with firearms safer by raising
awareness about responsible firearm ownership and storage". |
