NEWS RELEASE- SPOKANE— Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen and US
Attorney James A. McDevitt to Announce Project ChildSafe’s
Return to Washington Project ChildSafe
will distribute an additional
240,000
The National Shooting Sports Foundation has partnered with Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen and US Attorney James A. McDevitt, the WA Department of Fish & Wildlife and the local law enforcement community to distribute 240,000 free gun locks in Washington as part of the national Project ChildSafe (PCS) initiative. PCS will have distributed a grand total of 670,000 free gun locks to citizens in WA. PCS reminds gun owners to take steps to prevent a loaded gun from falling into the hands of a child, thereby preventing tragic accidents. Phase two of Project ChildSafe is funded by two grants from the U.S. Department of Justice that total $30 million. These two grants will fund the program from September 1, 2004, through August 31, 2005. Phase one of Project ChildSafe was funded by a $50 million U.S. Department of Justice grant. The current campaign will distribute over 12 million free firearm safety kits and follows the successful Phase One distribution of 20 million firearm safety kits over the past year to all 50 states. “This program fits in perfectly with the
long-term goals of the Lieutenant Governor’s office, which is to help
kids grow up healthy in safe communities, with opportunity. My office
and I heartily congratulate Project ChildSafe for its dedication and
foresight in developing a plan to continue the free gunlock giveaway
program with increased allocations.” - Lt. Governor Brad
