NEWS RELEASE Legislative economic development committee to study green jobs VANCOUVER – A legislative committee will meet in Vancouver Thursday, July 10 to learn how job opportunities related to renewable energy, or “green” jobs, are growing in the Evergreen State. The three-hour meeting of the Legislative Committee on Economic Development and International Relations, chaired by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, begins at 9 a.m. at the Vancouver Hilton. “Washington is a very progressive state when it comes to environmental issues. We need to be aware of how we can encourage and promote jobs as the sustainable energy industry develops and matures,” Owen said. “This meeting will look at some of these employment trends as well as some exciting new opportunities for job growth in this area.” Presenters from business and industry, academia, government and finance will give their perspectives on strategies, industry trends, legislation and opportunities within the green economy. The committee includes six members from the House and six from the Senate. Its purpose is to study and review economic development issues of importance to Washington. The legislative meeting is taking place in conjunction with the Southwest Washington Sustainability Conference and Trade Show, also at the Vancouver Hilton. The three-day conference will feature experts and leaders on topics ranging from building practices, climate change and renewable energy to consumer practices. It will include a keynote speech by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. who will speak on “Our Environmental Destiny.” The lieutenant governor will introduce Kennedy. More information about the committee and the
