second special session
for the Legislature to
finish its work on the
state budget and other

Astronaut visits
with lieutenant governor
to discuss space and
education

NASA astronaut
Mike Barratt met
with Lt. Governor Owen
and staff in his office
on June 11. A
native of Camas, Dr. Barratt spent 200 days on the International Space
Station, did a
"hard" landing
aboard a S...oyuz
capsule in a
farmer's field in
Kazakhstan and flew
on the final mission
of the Discovery in
2009. A physician,
he has both
participated and
lead recent NASA
studies and
discussions on the
impacts of extended
space flight on the
human body. The
visit was part of a
NASA effort to
educate elected
officials on the
benefits space
exploration has on
education and the
regional economy
as well as scientific
discovery. |
Chinese students
studying in Washington
visit Capitol and
provide Owen with update

Students from the Civil
Aviation Flight
University of China who
are complimenting their
studies with specialty
training at Clover Park
Technical College and
Green River Community
College stopped by the
Capitol on June 7 to
visit with the
lieutenant governor. The
Green River students are
enrolled in air traffic
control and airline
dispatch programs, while
the Clover Park students
are studying aircraft
maintenance.
Accompanying the
students is Ross
Jennings, vice president
for international
programs at GRCC. Qiu
(Qiuqiu) Zhenhua, chief
representative of the
Chengdu Office of West
China Development
International Group,
Inc. who is the
students' coordinator,
is at the lieutenant
governor's left.

Washington Mandy
Schendel and Chinese
community leader Mipo
Seto on June 7 regarding
ways for the Miss
Washington organization
to partner with the
state on economic
development and tourism.

Youth Advisory Council
(LYAC) is currently
accepting applications
for two-year terms. See

about LYAC and a link to
the application form.
Applications are due
June 25. Applications
are first reviewed by
council members before
going on to Lt. Governor
Owen for final
selection.
