Gov. Jay Inslee and Lt. Gov. Habib kicked off the Persian New Year celebrations with a #LiveTogether Facebook post on Wednesday. The recording was part of the “Nowruz Challenge,” a viral campaign involving a Persian and non-Persian wishing everyone a “Happy New Year” in Farsi: “Nowruz Mobarak.”
Silicon Valley angel investor Ali Partovi—who, with his brother Hadi Partovi was an early investor in Dropbox and an advisor of Facebook—spearheaded the hashtag earlier this year to bring Persians and non-Persians together in celebrating the holiday. The challenge also made an appearance on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, who wish everyone “Nowruz Mobarak” with actor and comedian Maz Jobrani.
Nowruz is celebrated at the time of the spring equinox, which falls on March 20 this year. It is celebrated by nearly 300 million people across the globe, of different faiths and diverse communities, and by more than 1 million Iranian-Americans.
