Sikh Priest Gurmeet Singh conducted the Senate’s opening prayer Tuesday morning, in a sign of solidarity with the Sikh community, after a member of the faith was shot in Kent last week. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime, according to national media reports.
Sen. Joe Fain invited the priest to conduct the prayer in response to the shooting, which occurred in his district.
Lt. Gov. Habib called last week’s shooting an “abhorrent” act of hate, and welcomed those gathered for the prayer, calling upon all Washingtonians to support threatened communities amid a rise in hate crimes nationwide.
