Senate Traditions: Floor Speeches & District Gifts

They’ve brought in beer, growlers, baked goods, and more. For years, Washington state senators have committed to the time-honored tradition of reciting their first floor speech and providing gifts to every member of the Senate.

This year, they followed the usual protocol. In fact just last week, senators Lisa Wellman and Hans Zeiger enjoyed their first floor speech of the legislative session, carrying the requisite gifts from their district.

The takeaways?

For Sen. Wellman: a large silver growler and gift card for beer from one of the 41st Legislative District’s bustling breweries.

For Sen. Zeiger: a beer from the 25th Legislative District and Puyallup Fair scone mix.

It was a fitting final “fling” before the Senate moved headfirst into weeks of intensive floor action.
